How to use this tool
Choose SRT → ASS or ASS → SRT, then paste the subtitles or upload a .srt, .ass or .ssa file. The result updates as you type and downloads with the matching extension. Past 5 MB the file is converted in the background instead of in the editor, up to 200 MB.
The style SRT → ASS creates
Every line goes on one style called Default: Arial at size 20, white text with a 2-pixel black outline and no shadow, centred at the bottom with 10-pixel margins. Open the file in Aegisub and edit that one style to restyle the whole file at once. Inside the lines, <i>, <b> and <u> become {\i1}…{\i0} and the like, an {\an8} already in the SRT is kept because ASS understands it, and <font color> tags are removed, so colours have to be set again in the style.

The Comment line is left out, \N becomes a real line break and the italics carry over. Two things need a look before you publish. The speaker names Asha and Ravi were in the Name field, which SRT doesn't have, so they are gone. And the PHARMACY sign, which ASS placed over the shop front, is now an ordinary subtitle at the bottom of the screen, on screen at the same time as Asha's line. Delete sign lines like that, or turn them into a bracketed note such as [Sign: Pharmacy].
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it read older .ssa (SubStation Alpha) files?
Yes. SSA v4 files have the same [Events] section, and the converter finds Start, End and Text by reading the Format line, so the SSA "Marked" column in place of ASS's "Layer" doesn't matter. The output of SRT → ASS is always the newer ASS (v4+) format.
Which bold and italic codes survive ASS → SRT?
{\i1}, {\b1} and {\u1} and their closing {\i0}, {\b0} and {\u0} become <i>, <b> and <u>. A weight such as {\b700} also counts as bold. If a line switches italics on and never off, the tag is closed at the end of that line. Colour, font, size, position, fade and karaoke codes are removed, because SRT has no way to express them.
What happens to the soft line breaks and hard spaces in ASS text?
\N, a forced line break, becomes a new line in the SRT. \n, a break that only applies in one wrapping mode, becomes a space, and \h, a non-breaking space, becomes an ordinary space. Without that, the codes would show up as a backslash and a letter in the middle of a subtitle.
