How to use this tool
Upload an image, then either type a width or height, with Lock aspect ratio filling in the other, or pick a percentage. The resized file downloads in the same format for PNG and WebP, and as a 92%-quality JPG for everything else.
Worked example: one photo, four sizes
An 1800 × 1200 camera JPG of 759 KB, resized here:
| Setting | Pixels | File size |
|---|---|---|
| 100% (re-saved only) | 1800 × 1200 | 232 KB |
| Width 1200 | 1200 × 800 | 107 KB |
| 50% | 900 × 600 | 66 KB |
| 200% | 3600 × 2400 | 629 KB |
Even at 100% the file shrinks, because the original had been saved at a higher quality than 92%. Halving each side keeps a quarter of the pixels and cut the size to under a tenth of the original. Doubling it made a file almost as big as the original, with no extra detail: the new pixels are blends of their neighbours, so the result looks soft when viewed at full size.
Frequently Asked Questions
What format and quality is the resized image saved in?
PNG and WebP images stay PNG and WebP. Everything else, including JPG, GIF and BMP, is saved as a JPG at 92% quality, which is visually close to the original but a new lossy save. Because the image is redrawn, camera EXIF data such as GPS location is not copied into the resized file.
Will a portrait phone photo come out sideways?
No. The browser applies the photo's rotation setting when it draws the image, so the resized file is upright, with its width and height the right way round. Because the metadata isn't copied, the upright version is what every app will show.
What size should I use for a website or an upload form?
Use the size the image will actually be shown at, or twice that for sharp display on high-resolution phone and laptop screens. A photo shown 600 pixels wide in a blog post needs 1200 pixels at most. For an upload form, go by the limit it states. If that limit is a file size, the table above shows how far resizing alone gets you: halving each side left a quarter of the pixels and a 66 KB file.
