How to use this tool

Upload an image, choose PNG, JPG, WebP, BMP or GIF, set the quality for JPG and WebP (default 90%), and convert. If your browser can't save the chosen format, you get a message instead of a file with the wrong contents.

Worked example: the same photo in three formats

An 1800 × 1200 camera JPG of 759 KB, converted in Chrome:

  • PNG: 2.32 MB, three times the original. PNG stores every pixel exactly, which suits screenshots and logos but not photos, and it can't restore detail the JPG had already discarded.
  • WebP at 90%: 102 KB, about one-seventh of the original. Check that the place you are sending it accepts WebP; some older software and upload forms still take only JPG and PNG.
  • JPG at 90%: smaller than the original, which had been saved at a higher quality; saving a JPG as JPG repeatedly loses a little detail each time.

Transparency and colours

PNG and WebP keep transparent areas. JPG and BMP can't store transparency, so a transparent logo gets a white background, which is better than the black a raw conversion would give. GIF output is limited to 256 colours and is saved as a single, still frame, so photos show visible banding in skies and skin tones, and an animated GIF loses its animation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can it convert HEIC photos from an iPhone?

Only in a browser that can open HEIC itself, which in practice means Safari on a Mac, iPhone or iPad. Chrome, Edge and Firefox can't decode HEIC, so the upload fails there with a message that the image couldn't be read. On an iPhone, setting Camera → Formats to Most Compatible makes new photos JPG.

Why did my PNG to JPG conversion get a white background?

JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas have to become some colour, and this tool uses white, which disappears on a white page. If the image will sit on a dark or coloured background, keep it as PNG or convert to WebP, which both keep transparency.

Is converting to BMP useful?

Only for old software that asks for it. BMP stores pixels uncompressed: the 1800 × 1200 test photo would be about 6.5 MB as a 24-bit BMP, against 2.32 MB as PNG, with no gain in quality over PNG.
