Slug Generator
Turn a title or phrase into a clean, URL-safe slug — perfect for blog posts, product pages, and file names.
10-tips-for-writing-better-react-componentsHow to use this tool
Type or paste a title. The slug updates as you type; choose a hyphen or an underscore as the separator and whether to keep capital letters, then copy it into your CMS or router.
What happens to real titles
| Title | Slug |
|---|---|
| GST @ 18% — what’s changed in 2026? | gst-18-whats-changed-in-2026 |
| Café & Bar -- Menu (2026) | cafe-bar-menu-2026 |
| C# vs. C++: which to learn first | c-vs-c-which-to-learn-first |
| ₹500 off on Diwali orders | 500-off-on-diwali-orders |
| दिवाली ऑफ़र 2026 | 2026 |
Apostrophes vanish without leaving a gap, so what’s becomes whats, and repeated separators collapse into one. The C# and rupee rows show where to step in: symbols that carry meaning disappear, so C# and C++ both become c, and the rupee sign is lost. Spell such words out before converting, for example "C sharp vs C plus plus" or "Rs 500 off".
Once a page is live, keep its slug
Changing the slug changes the address. Links people saved and search results point to the old one, so if you must rename a published page, set up a permanent (301) redirect from the old address to the new one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I remove small words like "for", "the" and "to"?
The tool keeps every word, because dropping them can change the meaning ("how-to-quit-a-job" against "how-quit-job") and there is no rule that requires it. Shorten a long title by hand when the slug gets hard to read, keeping the words someone would recognise in a shared link.
Should I use hyphens or underscores in a slug?
Hyphens. Google's documentation on URL structure recommends hyphens instead of underscores to separate words, because they help people and search engines identify the individual words. Underscores are offered here for systems such as file names or some databases that require them.
What happens to accented or non-English titles?
Accented Latin letters are reduced to their base letter, so "Crème Brûlée à São Paulo" becomes creme-brulee-a-sao-paulo, and ß, ø and ł become ss, o and l. Scripts with no Latin letters, such as Hindi, Gujarati or Chinese, are removed entirely: "नमस्ते दुनिया 2026" leaves only 2026. Type a transliterated version such as namaste-duniya for those.
