Invoice Generator
Build a GST invoice, with the tax split into CGST + SGST or IGST for you, and export it as a PDF. The form opens with a filled-in example; edit it or start blank.
Leave blank if you aren't registered; the PDF is then titled Invoice, not Tax Invoice.
Filled in from your GSTIN.
Filled in from the client's GSTIN; change it if the rules for your supply say otherwise.
Taxable value: ₹40,000.00
CGST (9%): ₹3,600.00
SGST (9%): ₹3,600.00
Total: ₹47,200.00
Intra-state supply: Gujarat to Gujarat, so the tax splits into two halves.
How to use this tool
Replace the example with your own invoice number, date and the two address blocks, or click Start a blank invoice. Enter your GSTIN and the client's, if they are registered: each one is checked as you type, and its first two digits fill in your state and the place of supply. Add each line with its HSN code (goods) or SAC (services), set the GST rate and click Download PDF.
CGST + SGST or IGST: the rule
The split depends on two places: where the supplier is, and the place of supply. Under the IGST Act, a supply is intra-State (section 8) when both are in the same State or Union Territory, and inter-State (section 7) when they are in different ones. An intra-State supply is taxed as CGST plus SGST, half the rate each (UTGST takes SGST's place in a Union Territory without its own legislature, such as Chandigarh or Ladakh). An inter-State supply is taxed as IGST at the full rate. The total is the same either way; what changes is which government collects it, and a buyer can only claim input tax credit if the right heads are on the invoice.
For most services supplied to a registered business, the place of supply is the client's registered location (section 12(2)), which is why the client's GSTIN usually settles it. Goods, and services such as work on immovable property, events and transport, follow their own rules, so the place of supply here can be changed by hand. The calculator then compares the two states: equal gives CGST + SGST, different gives IGST.
Worked example: the same invoice in two states
The form opens with an Ahmedabad web studio billing an Ahmedabad client (the names and GSTINs are made up, but valid in format). Three landing pages at ₹12,000 (SAC 998314, IT design and development) and hosting setup at ₹4,000 (SAC 998315, hosting) make a taxable value of (3 × 12,000) + 4,000 = ₹40,000. Both GSTINs start with 24, Gujarat, so at 18% the invoice shows CGST 9% ₹3,600 and SGST 9% ₹3,600, a total of ₹47,200.
Now change the client GSTIN to the Mumbai branch, 27AAKCS5678K1ZJ. The place of supply switches to Maharashtra (27), and the two lines become one: IGST 18% ₹7,200. The total is still ₹47,200. Change one character of a GSTIN, say the final J to K, and the check digit no longer matches: the field turns red and the PDF button stays off until it is fixed, because a mistyped GSTIN is the most common reason a client's accounts team sends an invoice back.
Each tax line is rounded to the paisa. For the other fields a tax invoice has to carry, how to number invoices and the MSME 45-day payment rule, see how to write an invoice that gets you paid faster.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is my invoice data uploaded anywhere?
No. The invoice is generated entirely in your browser and the PDF is created locally — your client details, item descriptions, and pricing are never sent to a server. Nothing is saved between visits either, so make sure to download the PDF before closing the tab.
What should I include in the invoice number?
Any consistent scheme that never repeats a number within a financial year. For a GST tax invoice, Rule 46 of the CGST Rules allows up to 16 characters: letters, digits, hyphens and slashes, such as INV/26-27/014. A series that includes the financial year restarts cleanly each April.
How does the calculator decide between CGST + SGST and IGST?
It compares your state with the place of supply. The same state (or Union Territory) means an intra-State supply, taxed as half CGST and half SGST, or UTGST in a Union Territory without its own legislature. Different states mean an inter-State supply, taxed as IGST at the full rate. Entering a valid GSTIN fills in its state automatically from the first two digits. For most services to a registered business, the place of supply is the client's registered location, but goods and some services have their own rules, so change the place of supply if yours is different.
Can I add multiple tax rates on one invoice?
Not on one invoice. The single GST rate is applied to the whole taxable value, so every line is taxed at the same rate. If an order mixes GST rates, issue one invoice per rate group from this page, or use billing software that prints the rate and tax amount on each line.
Does this invoice satisfy GST invoicing requirements?
It prints the fields most invoices need under Rule 46 of the CGST Rules: both GSTINs, place of supply, HSN or SAC codes, the taxable value, the tax split into CGST and SGST or IGST, and whether tax is payable on reverse charge. It does not add a signature, and businesses above the e-invoicing turnover threshold have to report invoices through the invoice registration portal instead. Check your own position before relying on it for compliance.
